“Help, I think I’ve got a leak in my pond!”
Is your pond losing more than 1 inch of water per week? If the answer to this is yes, then more than likely you have a leak.
Through experience and calculations on average a pond will lose up to 1 inch of water a week due to evaporation, anymore than that it means you pond or feature more than likely has a leak. So what can you do?
Finding a Pond Leak
-
The first step is simple. We have to identify roughly where the leak might be coming from.
To do this simply turn off the pumps and leave for 24 hours. If your water level continues to drop whilst the pumps are off, it will mean that the leak is more than likely from your pond.
Once the water level drops to a point where its stationary for a 24 hour period it will then be apparent that the water leak will be within the surface area line of the water. If you feel the leak is at the bottom of the pond, then rehouse your fish in a temporary pool.
If your pond does lose water whilst pumps are off check edging for any low points. If no low points can be found, then it can indicate that there is a hole in your liner.
-
If your pond level has not dropped then it means your leak is likely elsewhere. The most common area for a leak to occur is the water feature or waterfall.
Measure and record the level of water before turning the pumps back on, then remeasure the water level to see how much water is being lost over time.
Measuring the water level can help determine how severe the leak is.
-
While the waterfall is running expose the edges of the liner to see if you can spot any water spilling over the liner. Common signs of a low edge is the area around is wet.
If you find a low edge do not assume it is the only one, as there can be multiple.
If you believe you have solved the problem then we recommend you measure the water levels to see if there has been any change
-
If you have checked your waterfall and can’t find any sign of leakage, it may be your equipment.
It can be as simple as the hose fittings are not secure or even simple slipped off.
If the fittings are secure and show no signs of leaking, then check the hose line. As temperature change can sometimes affect the structural integrity of the hose
-
If a hole has been found in the liner, you can use a liner repair kit on the area. Be sure the damaged area is clean and thoroughly dried before application.
If there are more than 2 damaged areas on your pond liner, it is heavily recommended that you re-line your pond to guarantee no more leaks.
